View Full Version : My puppy was diagnosed with Parvo, but I'm afraid it was a false positive.

My puppy Alex is about 16 weeks old. I rescued her from a very bad environment in a nearby city. The past week she started vomiting. I thought maybe it may be the fact that she chews everything she can get her little mouth on. Then, about 3 days ago she started having diarrhea, and 2 days ago I noticed weight loss, no appetite, and no energy. I took her to the animal emergency hospital yesterday and they said she tested positive for Parvo. Well I couldn't afford the $1300 for the treatment to stay at the ER all weekend so I bought the antibiotics and Reglan and I'm giving her I.V. treatments at home. I started introducing her to white rice with chicken broth and minimal water every half hour (just small amounts of food at a time). Well this morning she finally ate a little rice and then a little cottage cheese! And she is not dehydrated. This morning after she went to potty, she started running around the yard for a minute and proceeded to try and chew things up again. For the past hour she is back to just laying around. Is there a chance the test results could have came back wrong? If not, can dogs survive this? I have moved her and her bed to the main living room which is hardwood floors and not putting her in her kennel (I don't care to clean the mess I just want to keep her comfortable). I also sleep in there on the couch to keep her close by and try to spoon feed her every hour. Is there anything else I should be doing? If so, please help. I don't want to lose her.

You are doing a good job but realize anything she brings up or eliminates is highly contagious. If you have any other animals in the house, they must be removed if you feel you must do this on your own. I hope the vet gave you persistent instructions to follow. Everything has to be cleaned up with bleach. Do some good research on Google by putting in Parvo in puppies and just read up on all you can, and good luck.

If it was an older dog with an immune system already established, not a problem, but a puppy is suspect because immune system is not good yet.

Thank you. We don't have any other dogs in the home. I have been researching this issue online but wanted to get advice from an actual person too. I am actually going to tear up the carpet. She has had really bad diarrhea and couldn't control it and I can't get the stains out. I was also wondering if there is a chance that the result could have been a false positive. The vet said it would take approximately 10-12 min. and they came back in 2.
