I have a shop wired with 110 power. I also have a bandsaw that has a 3HP motor that takes 220 @ 16 amps; 60Hz. Is it safe to use an 8,000 watt voltage regulator step up? I believe the shop is wired with four 15 amp circuits @ 110 Volts.

Does the shop have its own breaker box? Is that box 220?

It does, but it's 110. I'm in Iraq but heading home shortly. Hopefully there is a conduit running to the shop, which would allow me to easily run a heavier gauge wire off the 220 in the house. (I think there's 220 in there) However if there isn't, I need a feasible solution.

There are 4 circuits in the shop if I remember correctly. Not sure how many amps on each though.

Im not sure who put it in. But it wouldn't be that uncommon for a breaker box in a shop setting to have 220 run into it. From there you can mix and match your circuts as needed.

I wish that were the case, but my uncle says that it is all 110. I plan to have an electrician that I know look at it when I get home but I am contingency planning as though there is only 110 available. I should also mention that this shop is quite old. I believe that it was wired in the 60's.
