As long as you are not pulling more than 20 amps

What are you trying to hook up? Or what are you trying to repair. What voltage, amps, etc.

Although the NEC doesn't address it specifically, it's a bad idea to mix wire sizes in a circuit. It allows for the possible overload of the smaller wire by mistakenly fusing the circuit for the larger wire.

Only reason I would do something like that is if I had a receptacle on the side of the house fed by #12's, and I wanted to run a Line from there with some distance, then I might use #10 to reduce the Voltage Drop.
