Hi,

I'm looking at a possible job offer in the US (postdoc research position) and I'm trying to work out if it's going to be a finically viable option - I'd come in on an H-1B visa, earning around $30k. Would I be liable to pay taxes in the US or in the UK and how can I calculate at what level this would be?

Thanks, Cat.

Cat:

You will be liable for U.S. income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare) taxes, plus state income taxes if you work in one of the 43 states that have a state income tax.

Under the U.K. - U.S. Tax Treaty, no UK taxes will be due.

FICA taxes will be a flat 7.65%.

Assuming you are single, your federal tax liability will be about $3,200.

You need to identify the state before I can estimate the state tax liability.
