Ryu got his rabies shot over a week ago now. And I just noticed he has a BIG HARD lump on his hip where he got the shot. Its like huge enough that it stands out noticeably.. is that normal.. I can't afford going to the vet right now but should I call them

I'm a cat person, by the way. I just Googled this and found that it happens a lot apparently. Most of the time, the lump goes away, but I'm sure it would ease your mind to give a vet a call in the morning. I'll bet this is a common question.

Its normal. However I'm wondering why you gave a rabies shot so early?

16 weeks isn't early for a rabies shot... every dog I've ever owned the vet gave the shot at 16 weeks...

16 weeks is a good age.

It's like a small bruise from the needle. Remember those tetanus shots at school? Kind of like those. My arm used to swell so bad, I couldn't lift it past my head.

If it gets bigger, or he is in noticeable pain, I would contact your vet. Do they do a follow up call to see how he is doing after the shot?

I called her today.. ( couldn't sleep gong back to bed once I answer this) she said if it hasn't gone away within two months from the date of the shot to bring him in... or if it hurts him.. I poke it. I can move it. It doesn't hurt him right now

I was always told to wait until 6 months to allow the immune system to strengthen...

Usually you give your first set of vaccines at either 6 or 8 weeks, the next set at 10 or 12 weeks, then the third plus rabies around 14-16 weeks.

That's the routine I have followed with all of out dogs.

That's the routine I have followed with all of out dogs.

It's more or less the general protocol. We have split vaccines before and done rabies at 18-20 weeks.

It might be different in the states though
