Which one is common?

Most 230 Volt Pool Motors will have just three connections. One hot wire to L1, the other to L2, and the green wire goes to the ground connection. These will usually be both black or both red wires, or sometimes one black and one red. There is no common wire on a 230v pump unless perhaps it is a 2-speed. The bare copper wire connects outside the wiring compartment to the frame of the motor and is called a bond or bonding wire. Hope this helps.
