Hi everyone I just want to explain what I am going through and get some suggestions on the best way to resolve the conflict.

I moved in a rooming apartment building a little under a year ago and recently I just found out that the living spaces are illegal. The building inspector came here and he gave all the tenants including myself 30 days to leave. The owner is never around but has an appointed property manager who collects the rent. I did do owe back rent however since I did not know that the place was illegal couldn't I sue the owner for the amount of rent I paid? Also the property manager tried to lock out all the tenants from the building as well. We called the cops and they took the lock off the door. Also there were some times I was late with the rent but the property manager would give out printed letters on the door stating he would evict us.. which I found out is illegal as well... My question is this what exactly is the best course of action to take? Thanks in advance.

Nothing illegal ( at least in the states I have owned or still own property) to post late or eviction notices on door.

Yes, in most places a person can not profit from a illegal enterprise, and you may be able to sue them for the rents paid for an illegal rental. *** unknown if court will rule for you, or merely partial, but it is worth a try.

Best action, move quickly before something else happens, hire an attorney to review your case locally. ( second best) sue in small claims court for rental
