My mother is 64 and owes about $30K in credit card debt. She currently works at a $7 per hour job to bring in some money to help pay the mortgage. She and my father are both on SS, my father is in late stages of COPD with great difficulty breathing. My mother suffers from vertigo, the doctor thinks from a mini stroke, and she is also on medication. They cannot pay this debt. Between medicine, health insurance, mortgage and bills what comes in each month goes out each month, plus a little bit more which I help by paying that extra.
She has been served papers for a suit over about 12K of this debt, plus $2K in 'expenses', legal fees, etc. She has 20 days to reply.
They cannot afford a lawyer. I cannot afford a lawyer for them.
What options do they have?
