Is it illegal to go out with someone over 16 if you are under 16? I didn't think it was unless something intimate happened.

Question was moved from law?

To the op,at 13 you are too young to even consider dating, a young man over 16 has no business showing you anything other then a polite hello.

Things can get out of hand very quickly, and your not yet mature enough to handle anything that may crop up.

What do your parents think about you dating?

I would advice you NOT to pursue this at all.

It depends on where are you located, your age, and how much over 16?

Scotland and we were just wondering because some people say 1 thing then others say another.

There are no laws governing an age gap in dating as long as it does not go any further, however I would strongly recommend that you or your friends do not consider it as a possibility.

Could you please give details of these places, age and how much over 16?

Depends on what you call wrong.

Let me give you a scenario, lets say you and a 16/17 are 'going out',and there is some kissing,he's going to want to kiss, and then he starts putting pressure on you for more then just kissing, what then?

At 16 the guys are way more mature then you, that's just a fact, and not a reflection on you or your friends.

16 year old boys don't want to be friends with 13 year olds.

If you were 16,would you be interested in a 13 year old boy?

no.

Why not?

Cause at 16 you will be able to go to places he can't go,you will have more freedom, and you will have totally different interests, the same applies now, what could a 16 year old and a 13 year old have in common.

You have to wonder why a 16 year old is not trying to date a girl his own age.

Could it be that it would be easier to pull the wool over the eyes a 13 year old.

I know I seem to be painting 16 year old boys a terrible colour, and not all are after one thing, but it still remains the same,16 year old boys and 13 year old girls have nothing in common.

Dear Needssomehelpplease,

I know nothing about the laws in Scotland. Perhaps your parents could answer this for you. I will bow out. Good luck to you.

Please do not use the comments feature to post a follow-up question. Use the Answer This Question options instead.

As noted there are no laws governing dating, there are laws governing sexual activity between someone under the age of consent.

It appears that you already know what answer you want to hear and you are not likely to hear it hear.

There is a big difference between a 13 year old and a 16 year old. There is very little they have in common. There are things a 16 year old can do that a 13 year old cannot, so ask yourself why a boy that age wants to date a 13 year old.
I don't think a 13 year old has any business dating some one that age.

BTW the rating system is only to be used if the answer is inaccurate or accurate, not if the opinion differs from yours.

It doesn't say reply, it says Comment on this Post. The Reply box, which you just used, is at the bottom of the thread. You have been using the Comments on This post box.

Sorry, there are different interfaces for this site. It shouldn't say Reply. I will see about getting it changed.

If the question is whether it's legal to DATE without sexual contact, yes, it's legal.

The how's and whys are a different story.

I am not aware of DATING age restricitions anywhere. Sexual contact, of course, is something else and having parents forbid it is yet something else.

Are you saying your research indicates this is illegal in some places?

Well yes I mean dating. I don't think my parents would forbid it. As long as their kids are happy and aren't breaking the law then they're happy.

Then it sounds like it's a win/win situation.

Hello Redhed35 and JudyKayTee,

Sorry for not responding to you sooner. Since I had bowed out of this thread I didn't realize you had a question for me until today.

Sadly, yes. There are places in our world that have laws against dating: Saudi Arabia and Iran are two that come to mind.

Judy - you refer to my "research". My answers are based on my experience and personal knowledge. I would not reply otherwise.

Thank you both for your interest and for helping this young person out. Glad to know you're out there. Take care.

Going out: any age. Sex: 16 (under Scottish law, see Ages of consent in Europe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Europe#Scotland)).

But that's just the legal bit.

Is an over-16 and an under-16 going out a good idea? That's a whole different story and depends on age difference, individual personalities, etc.

You should read what you quote better. Age of consent refers to sexual activity not "going out" (dating). So you gave misleading info about the "legal bit".

That's exactly what I meant. Thanks for pointing out the ambiguity. Here's the same info, presented a little more clearly (changed text in italics):

Going out: Scottish law says nothing on the subject.
Sex: 16 (under Scottish law, see Ages of consent in Europe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Europe#Scotland)).

Hope that clears up any potential misunderstandings.
