Shaking the tank proves it to be empty, pressure gauge is at 0. How can I tell if a submersible well pump is working? Can the problem be in the pressure tank or is it more likely in the well recovery rate or well pump?

Basically, if the pump is working, then water will come out of a faucet. Short of that, do this:

1. Make sure the breaker is on. If it is, then pull the grey cover off the switch by removing the nut on the front. Check to see if the points are closed.

2. If they are closed, then use a voltmeter across the two wires going to the pump to see if you have current getting to the pump. Will probably read 240 volts, but in some cases will be 120, depending on the pump voltage.

Do those two things, then get back to us.

BTW, you can frequently check the pump simply by putting your hand on the wellpipe. When the pump is running, you will feel a very gently vibration in the pipe.

Did the switch tests and found no indication that the pump was running. Replaced the pump and have water now. Thanks!
