I bought coffee from a local donut shop today and it came in styrofoam cup instead of plastic, my question is whether it is safe to microwave it or is styrofoam not recommended?

Thanks everyone! It was one of those big cups that was plastic on the outside and styrofoam on the inside. In this case it was better to ask first.

Styrofoam and the microwave play well together. The hotter it gets, the weaker it gets. Whatever is in the styrofoam must have a way to vent.

Proceed with caution is the best advice. See this article: What Happens to Styrofoam in a Microwave? | eHow.com (http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4925545_what-happens-styrofoam-microwave.html)

I have microwaved food in 'togo' containers many times and nothing melted. Never tried coffee.
Edit: I read KISS' link, I won't be nuking them anymore

In general, it's better not to microwave food in plastics, since they tend to release toxic materials into the food you are heating. Use pyrex or ceramic whenever possible.
