My air conditioning unit will not cool the house & makes extremely loud banging & screeching noises when it's running. What could be possible causes for this?

Just a quick question.

Check the blower motor and wheel on the inside and if the noise is outside check the fan motor and blade.

How would I check these? And if I did how would I know if there was something wrong with them?

Sorry to say but if you have to ask that question you probably should not attempt to work on your unit. A basis of mechanical skills is necessary as well as electrical experience. A person who is mecahnically inclined would have already take the unit apart without asking how.

You will be better served if you take an HVAC class at your local school that offers such classes since there can be quite a bit to look for and you can also hurt yourself working on the equipment so if you are not mechanically inclined it is better to be safe than sorry. I am just not into getting anyone hurt but if you take a class you will be better prepared for the next breakdown.

My dad is very mechanically inclined, I just need to know if these are parts I can buy and have replace or if it is a must that I call a business to come out. They all require payment at the time they come out & coming out alone is $75-$85 plus another $75-$85/hr plus the cost of parts. I'm a poor single parent & I can't know if I can have the kind of money they're going to be wanting if I have no idea what the problem is. I'm kind of in a tough spot. The house stays at 80 degrees & up.

Sure these are parts that can be replaced and usually the parts are available locally or in some cases on Ebay or other sites. Your Dad can probably figure it out. If I am around here your Dad can post the exact model number and brand when he finds out which unit is causing problems and the parts needed and we will try and help you locate a place where you can buy them.
