View Full Version : Is it safe to remove 2 studs by the stairs?- (with pictures)

I still don't know the answer if I can remove the two studs right next to my basement stairs. I got actual pictures from MY basement.

I am trying to cut off half of the wall so the rooms more visible as I walk in.

Yes you can. HOWEVER I can see that the studs support a bearing wall with the roof truss sitting on the wall. You will need to install a large enough header to support the trusses and that will drop the opening another 10-12 ". Not sure if it would be worth it. Another thing to consider is fall protection, codes are getting strict about that.

Support ceiling with temp wall before taking studs out. Put in double 2x8 header and jack studs. Frame knee wall between jack studs at 30'' from floor.

Build flower box using 1x6 with 1 5/8'' poles going from box to header.
