My air conditioner compressor does not turn off. I am concerned it will BURN UP! I appreciate your help. Jo

Sounds like a stuck contactor, or have you ruled out the tstat isn`t killing power to the a/c,, try disconnecting the smaller tstat wire from the contactor does it stop running?
