Our Briggs & Stratton (Craftsman) rider mower quit working a few weeks ago. Sears came out and while they do not know what exactly is wrong with it, as it does not crank or turn they want to fit new engine or re-cond. One no less than $1000! My husband is trying to work out what caused it to die. It's only got 110 hours on it and we are amazed it hasn't lasted longer.
Hubby is now stuck - he has taken the top end of the engine off incl. the flywheel and the head - he cannot see anyway to get to the piston and rod which is where we think the problem lies without removing the casing. Does anyone know how to get to the Piston & Rod?
Also, apparently Sears has a totally different parts # set up than other repair shops so we are now wondering if we will even be able to get the parts should we be able to fix it. Anyone able to help with either of these?
Thanks!

Clueless. No numbers. Not the sears model # of the tractor, nor the briggs engine numbers.

Sears and briggs use the same p/n's.

Breakdown diagrams and parts are easy to find. www.searspartsdirect.com and Small Engines, Lawn Mower Engines and Generators by Briggs & Stratton (http://www.briggsandstratton.com).

Repair manuals cost you. Breakdown diagrams free.

Hi,
You do not get at the rod and piston without a teardown, Try this manual on for size:
