I have a boat that runs light off a 12v car battery the lights get extremely hot and usually burn out before I can even make it back to the dock. All of my wires are good everything is right I just don't get why they keep burning up. Help?

It is possible that the charging system may be overcharging at times causing lights to burnout

You need to get a good digital voltmeter and measure the voltage at the light socket. The most common reason that a bulb of any version fails early is excessive voltage. Also make absolutely sure that you have 12 volt bulbs and not 6 volt bulbs. They look alike.

The word "version" should be "voltage", but I don't have the ability to edit my response.

All of these answers are good based on the symptoms.

The contacts of the bulbs need to be checked as well. Use dialectric grease on the contacts of the bulbs.

Consider replacing any tail light or running light bulbs with LED substitutes for two reasons:
1. They won't be subject to vibration damage
2. They will use significantly less electricity.

May be pricey to replace.
