Our garbage disposal suddenly stopped working and I tried to press the reset button and it didn't do any good. Yesterday I started the dishwasher and was also doing some dishes in the left sink (we have a double sink, the right sink is smaller and is with the garbage disposal). When the dishes washer started to drain, the water started to come out of the garbage disposal. Since I never stood next to the sink when I ran dishwasher before, I wonder if it is the back up of the water that caused our garbage disposal to fail.

Also, who should I call to get this problem fixed. I assume it'd be a plumber, but would a plumber install the garbage disposal also?

Thanks!

You have clogged GD drain outlet...

1 GD has small outlet, right above grinding disk, inside the GD. Disconnect electricity to GD, put your finger inside and feel if it is clear
2. Drain from GD is clogged. Dismantle drain pipe under the sink, clean with hose and reinstall.

It makes a good practice to use lots of water to flush food leftovers from GD after every use.

GD failure will most likely be not associated with DW.

GD should be on separate circuit breaker. See if it is in ON position. Then try to restart GD with the red reset button.

If it hums but doesn't spin than you have something stuck on the inside preventing GD from starting up. Turn electricity to GD OFF take broom stick, put it inside GD and try to spin it manually. Then, remove broom stick, turn elec. ON and see if it works.

If no hum then you may need new GD. You should call plumber to install it for you - or if you are reasonable handy, we can lead you through installation.

Let us know how it went. Milo
