I have a garden and I don't exactaly how big the cantaloupes are supposed to be. One still has the nob on the end so I don't think it's quite ready yet.

About "Melon size" LOL
Seriously though, I could not find an official answer, but I did find a really cool cantaloupe sorting machine... here a link to it with a video!

It sounds like you are not really asking how big is a ripe one, but actually, "how do you know it's ready to be picked... Here is a link to some VERY dry reading and more than I ever really wanted to know about Melons and their ripeness.

"Cantaloupes usually change color from greenish to beige as they ripen. "Full slip" varieties separate easily or may even drop from the vine when ripe. However, the slip does not develop in Crenshaw, Casaba, or some honeydew types. Most varieties soften slightly at the blossom end and become fragrant when they are ripe." Cooperative Extension Service is always a good source for gardening questions. How do you know when a cantaloupe is ready to pick? Is a watermelon ripe when the curly vine is dried up on the end? - eXtension (http://www.extension.org/faq/13459)
It has been my experience that cantelopes grown for size (fertilized excessively) are not as tasty as the smaller melons.

Pardon me? I provided you with a site that explains everything.
Where did you find the information and how much more expansive was what you found?
