My first pregnancy I was on blood thinners and had to be induced. It ended in an emergency c-section. I'd really like to do a vbac. If I'm on blood thinners again and have to be induced, can I still do a vbac?

While most women are good candidates for a VBAC, it is becoming more difficult to find a careprovider who would allow one. VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean) were done more several years ago, but liability issues have caused their decline... even for those women who wouldn't need an induction.

The possibility of a uterine rupture goes up a bit if someone with a previous c-section is being induced so the majority of women will require a repeat c-section. Keep in mind as well that merely being induced puts you at a higher risk for a c-section as well. Much will depend on your doctor and even hospital policy were you plan to deliver. Some will look at each individual case and make a determination, others will have a flat out no VBAC policy... especially when an induction is involved.

Do you have a known clotting issue or was it specific to just your first pregnancy?

They said my Protein S was deficient, and that was why I had to be on the thinners. Apparently it's not uncommon during pregnancy. I was tested after pregnancy and everything was normal. I'm hoping I won't have to be on them again. If I talked to a doctor about it and told them that history, would they consider me for vbac? Or would it rule out the option?

I'd certainly talk to them. The blood clotting won't really be the issue. If they felt it was necessary to induce, that would become the issue. It really will come down to who is taking care of you, what the hospital/birthing center policy might be, and whether you need an induction.

Keep in mind, there are not that many true medical reasons for inductions... so that would be something else to discuss with your doctor.

I had to be induced because I had to be off the blood thinners a certain amount of time before I could have the baby, but not for too long so I was at risk. So I'd imagine that if I'm on the thinners again it'll be the same situation. They didn't want me to go into labor because of the blood thinners. So I was induced a few days early.

That is often the way of handling the situation, but not the only way. Would you have the same doctor? A different doctor might go over other options with you. Worth looking into more and weighing the pros and cons with your doctor.
