Is there a kit to change a "three handle" bathtub fixture (cold, shower, hot) to a single control fixture? If so where would I find such a kit and what is the kit called. Your help will be greatly appreciated..

There is no "kit" per say that Im aware of. The problem is that in a single confiruration the pipes will be a lot closer together. Also your going to need to seal the wall somehow if your not rebuilding. A combination of elbows and short nipples will get you in line pretty quickly. If your using existing copper lines then you will have to shorten the main lines a little to make room for the elbows and straights.

You didn't do your internet research properly.

It's called a re-model cover plate. Here is a link to a number of them: Replacing 3 hole faucet unit with a shower valve - TOH Discussions (http://advice.thisoldhouse.com/showthread.php?t=12377)

Was thinking of the other kind where it comes straight out of the wall. The plates would have to be pretty wide to cover.

Guess that's what's called a brain fart ;)

They are. Here is the insruction manual: http://www.moen.com/shared/pdf/instruction_sheets/ins1911.pdf

They aren't cheap either.

Yes 5there is! Moeen makes a remodel plate, (see image) to convert your old 5three knob valve to a single handled one. These chrome plates cover the three holes and are a attractive addition to any bathroom. If you need assistance in mounting your new valve we'll be glad to help. Regards, Tom

Tom nailed it. Besides Moen there are few other manufacturers who make these plates. It will require some skill to switch from 3-handle faucet to single handle but you can certainly do it. Let us know how you did. Milo

Gee, what about my post on the re-model plate. You know sometimes I get left in the dark. It's even the Moen, with the model # and INSTRUCTIONS. Go figure.

Thank You for starting me in the right direction. You are right I did not do my research properly. I am not the kind of guy to make excuses, so I must say the reason I didn't research the internet properly is because I am as much of a plumber as I am a spaceship pilot. I had no clue about a cover plate or even what to call it. Just call me a little slow, but I always thought not knowing is OK as long as you ask and learn. Stupid is when you do not know and will not ask and learn. I do appreciate your feedback. Maybe I can be of help to you on another subject.

Tom, Thank You. I have worked on a few simple plumbing task, but this change in totally new to me. In other words I am far from being a Plumber. I had no idea about the cover plate. I may have to take you up on assisting me in mounting the new valve. At this point I have no clue what I am getting into until I get the old valve out and see what I will need to change over in regards to the pipe configuration. A tip for you will certainly be in order for help. Your response was greatly appreciated.

OOPS! I answered before I got down this far...

NOTICE: I give KISS full credit for mentioning Moen first. I didn't mean to hijack your post. My apologies!

Grampy, Here's another conversion remodel plate,(see image). There will be instructions with the new valve, Converting to a single handle is fairly simple. Your new valve will come with a round plastic cover you will use to cut a hole in the tile using the diverter hole as a center.
If there is no backing to secure the new valve I have had luck placing a piece of fur strip in front of the valve and tightening the face plate bolts against it.
If you have more questions we're as close as a click. Good luck, Tom
