I had sewage waste that came through the drain in my basement floor from a big rain we had over the weekend. How can this be prevented in the future?

With a sewer back flow check valve. However its not a DIYer project and you should get 3 bids from local plumbers or sewer contractors. Flooding-Sewer Backflow Valves (http://gohsep.la.gov/factsheets/FloodsSewerbackflowvalves.htm)

As a rule I don't recommend installing a sewage check valve unless the city has a back up problem in the street main.
Let's check and see who's at fault here. Locate the house cleanout band open it up. Is there standing water in the line? No?
Now cycle the washer. Is water coming out of the open cleanout?
If you you have a clog between you and the street that must be snaked. Good luck, Tom
