Hi! I'm doing an Art project on cubism.
My art teacher told me to do a cubism on a still life(fruits), but, he didn't clearly explain to me. Can you help me? And give me some advices, how to do it? Thanks ;)

Hi, anna002!
Have you ever drawn a picture where the only things that you were allowed to use in the picture were certain kinds of shapes, like maybe straight lines, circles, squares and rectangles?
I'm asking about that for a very good reason!
Thanks!

I do hope that you return to here, anna002!

Thanks!

So, do you mean that you're done with your project?
anna002
Jun 3, 2010, 08:33 AM
Oh, no, not yet, I mean that I have already done a project where I was allowed to use certain kinds of shapes, like straight lines, circles, squares and rectangles.
So, what's the next step? :O

Cubism is very much like being able to only use certain kinds of shapes.
Many of the works of Pablo Picasso would be prime examples of that.
Picasso, Cubism - Google Search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=Picasso%2C+Cubism&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=)
What mediums are you allowed to use for your still life, please?
anna002
Jun 3, 2010, 08:49 AM
Oh, I can use any medium, I need.
But, is cubism about drawing things in a cubic way? Or in a distorted way?
Because I'm doing one on fruits.
Clough

Okay. A good way to practice this would be to use soft lead pencils. Even colored pencils would be okay.
Yes, the way can be somewhat distorted. Angles and definite shapes with angles of some sort definitely come into play.
Think of a banana. It's basically like a half-moon. You could make it more rectangular in shape.
An apple would be like a circle. You could have an apple on an apple to create the impression of having angles.
A pear could have more of a triangle shape, as could also strawberries.
Do you have an idea as to what I'm getting at here?

Yes, I get your point. I will try to do it.
Thanks for helping! :)

Are you going to do some practicing before putting together the final project?
I would assume that you can also have other objects in the still life, like a basket, glass, tray, plate, knife, etc. to make things more interesting. Can you?
Do you have a scanner and/or digital camera?
Clough

What I'm getting at, is that I hope that you might be able to post one or more examples here of what you're trying to do. I would love to see images of your work! :)
You'll also find some examples of still life done with fruit as the subject by clicking on the following search.
Still Life Fruit, Cubism - Google Search (http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&q=Still%20Life%20Fruit%2C%20Cubism&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi)
I'm sure that yours would not need to be as complicated as some of those that you'll find in that search.
I need to go now to do work, and I'll return later tonight.
Thanks!

I would even appreciate seeing some of the drafts, if you wouldn't mind?
I'm assuming that your project will be for points or a grade of some kind. Won't it?
