My kitchen faucet started doing a odd thing. When we run the hot water, it runs fine for a few seconds and then suddenly turns off to a very low volume. If we turn it off and on again, same thing. The cold water works fine--it's just the hot that is a problem.

If we only turn the hot on to a low volume, it works fine. But as soon as we put it up higher, it shuts down to the low volume again.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Susie

Sounds like either a loose washer or debris in the hot side. Could be at the faucet or at the stop valve under the sink.
Turn off stop valve under the sink, remove hot stem, check that washer is tight. Hold cup or pan over valve and turn on water briefly to flush.

If that does not fix problem do the same thing at stop valve. I am inclined to believe that it is debris at stop valve.

Is your faucet a one handled or a two knob one? How old is it? What brand name is it? Back to you, Tom

Well two years later and we finally have our answer. I'm posting it in case it helps someone reading this.

Embarrassing to admit, the problem turned out to be that the water wasn't turned on enough under the sink. As soon as the water got hot, it expanded the washer enough to shut off the flow.

It doesn't really make sense to me because this problem started happening all of a sudden and I hadn't turned the knob at all. And when the water was working, it was a pretty good flow. But the plumber came and when he turned it all the way on (he needed to use a wrench), the problem disappeared.

So it just goes to show you, go with the simplest explanation first.
