Is it common for 16 yr old girls to get a tongue piercing? Just wondering if I'm too old fashioned or if nowadays its just a popular trend, just for fashion.. For me, when I think of tongue piercings, I think its for sexual fun.

Hi, mom33!

It's not uncommon. But, what kind of tongue piercing is it about which you're inquiring, please?

Thanks!

I don't know why they do it but my policy is that my child cannot get any piercings or tatoos at all until and unless he is totally financially independent of me. If he choses to do so at 18 but I'm still paying his college tuition, he knows he may find himself on his own financially.

It's a hard line but these tatoos and piercings are very common causes of hepatitis and frequently get infected. They can be a big obstacle to getting a job, and are often perceived as counter-cultural and negative. Tongue rings in particular connote that the individual is available to give oral sex. Not everyone who had a tongue ring means that by it, but if they choose to have one they need to know it will be understood that way.

I would not allow it and she cannot do it legally without a parent's consent.

I won't allow tongue piercing. I've spent too much on my daughter's dental work for her to chip a tooth on a piercing.

Just tell her she can't get her tongue pierced until she's 18. Most likely, she just wants to get it done because her friends have their's pierced.

I was a teenager a few years ago, and I still don't agree with most tattoos and piercings before turning 18. Things are just too much up in the air at that age. You're still figuring out who you are and what you like. It's too easy to make a decision to get a tattoo or a piercing and then change your mind a couple years later.
