Television is not prohibited by the Muslim faith. It is a personal thing only.

Assalaam alaikum Zaida,
Television as a source of news and information is not a bad thing, but for muslims that which shows women without hijab, promotes (edited to add )music , violence, sex, drinking, consumerism etc seems to go against our religious teachings, hence it is disliked due to the content of television programs.
Even cartoons, many children's programs have episodes based on festivals of non muslims as the entertainment is mostly for their children. Some cartoons show things which are not exactly what every parent wants to show their kids. Having a parent filter the programs before children watch them is a better idea.
Even non muslim experts discourage too much television for kids and adults alike as it leads to lethargy, sometimes obesity in kids,
Eye problems and children disliking activities which are healthy like playing outdoors or spending family time.

Salam Alaikum, Azida. Firmbeliever gives the best answer. Be patient with your grandmother and respect her wishes for the times that you are with her.
