I was just wondering, when installing a shower is there a code that states weep holes in the drain are mandatory or is it just good practice?

Thanks

Weep holes are built in to a flange type shower drainj, (see image) to drain away any excess water that seeps through the tile and grout. Without them watrer could build up and leak out, This is covered in chapter 9, section 911.1 Showers of The Standard Plumbing Code. Weep holes are mandated by code. Regards, Tom

In addition to excellent response from Tom: if you install drain w/o weep holes your concrete shower pan will be constantly wet and eventually will disintegrate. Make sure you cover weep holes with toilet paper or bread before you pour concrete. You don't want to cement them in .
