View Full Version : Joining the injured reserve

If I didn't have bad luck I'd have no luck at all.
Was driving my convertible today, enjoying the sunshine, came out from under an overpass, "something" hit the windshield, the top of my head, my face just below my sunglasses. Reached up and touched my face, saw my hand was bloody, pulled over, blood running down my face. It was bleeding fairly heavily so I bunched my jacket against it and went right to the ER. Strangely there was no pain for a while.
Apparently wounds to the face bleed a lot.
The ER stopped the bleeding and cleaned it but I wouldn't let the ER Doctor stitch. He called for a Plastic Surgeon who came in and closed it (internal and external stitches). It runs from just below my sunglasses on my right side to about 1/2" above my right lip. The whole process was remarkably quick - in fact, I was on my laptop while waiting for the Plastic Surgeon to arrive.
They called the Police and the Police came (I didn't call the Police) and found some rocks, about half the size of my fist, in my car. It "appears" that a truck loaded with stone dropped some of the load on the overpass just as I was coming out from under the overpass.
I have a dent on the hood of the car but the windshield did not break. I can't imagine what THAT is going to cost me. Next time I'm buying American.
I have a black eye, it's swollen almost shut and won't stop tearing (although I am told that will stop by tomorrow), all around the area is bruised, and I have some very ugly stitches. He tells me if the scar is bad it can be reduced but I'm not thinking that far ahead.
My husband is out of Town. I am going to be off the Board, feeling sorry for myself for a couple of days, in a fetal position in a dark corner, living on coffee and cheetos. I have some GREAT pain pills!
Chances of finding the truck? Slim to none. Police took a report for an unsecured load but...
There is a lesson to be learned here - I'm just not sure what it is.
Aren't FrChuck and I both on the injured reserve list?

Wow! I'm feeling for you Judy and glad that it wasn't any worse than it was!
That would have scared the ____ out of me!
I hope that they find the truck!

Judy.. Gosh.. that's awful. You rest and take care of yourself. I hate those trucks when they're carrying something like that.
May the bird of paradise fly up that truckers nose.

Oh my,I'm amazed you were able to keep control of the car and not get killed!
I would get in touch with a local TV station and see if anyone knows who the culprit may be,ask them to set up a hotline for any information.
You may not be the only victim.
Or place an article in your local editorial page.Or both!
Being an investigator will surely help you to solve this,if it can be solved,I have faith you have the smarts and the determination to find the culprit.
Chances are it will happen again to some innocent person and the outcome could be a loss of life!
I'm so sorry my friend, this is just an atrocity!
Rest up and then get angry and then get justice!

Artlady.. That is true. I'm glad it wasn't worse. There is a chance it will happen to someone else and end up costing someone his or her life.

Judy,
Get well soon!
How I hate people who don't follow traffic rules, they are made for a reason.
Whether he gets caught or not, there will always be another fool to follow their footsteps.

God bless you Judy.
I would look into it. Those dump trucks usually have GPS. Jot down the exact time of day it was when it occurred. And try to find out what company was doing demolition in that area. It's worth a try.
At least is was accidental, and not vandalism.
I hope you heal up soon.

Judy,
D'you still have enough pills? excon may have some friends out your way.
Stop giggling.
Closest I've ever come was losing a radiator to one of those but that was on a 2 lane road and I got the company name off the truck. Good luck.

Hope you feel better and recover fast.
Your so lucky, it could have been so much worse. Things like that have caused severe injury, or and even death.
Insurance should cover any damage to the vehicle? Right?
Get well, and get lots of rest. Happy you were taken care of well in ER.

Today (Sunday) is a MUCH better day. The pain is better, I was able to sleep last night, it pulls but the swelling is down.
I must be better - now I'm working on finding the truck. Up until now I just shrugged when asked about it.
Thanks for your good thoughts and prayers.
It's a lesson to be learned - I just can't figure out what the lesson is!

The lesson is to drive a semi, no one can hurt you then, but they better watch out! ;)
Wishes for a speedy recovery Judy. Silver lining, it could have been worse. Ya, I know, that doesn't help much, but still... :)

I just happened upon your post. I hope you don't have any scarring and you were extremely lucky; you kept your wits about you or you would have been in some really nasty trouble.
Take care and mend well and don't stay in that dark corner too long !

Thanks - had the last of the stitches removed and he did a WONDERFUL job. The area nearest my eye is the worst (puffed area) but the scarring is going to be minimal. I'm sure I gushed all over when I saw it because the Doctor looked embarrassed. My No Fault DID pay the medical bills.
I could do without the scar but I am a happy camper with the result.
Thanks everyone for being there at the time - I was just rattled to the core.

Laughing - I tried landscapers (thinking it was one of "them) and topsoil providers (same thing) and came up with nothing. Of course, the people overhead probably had no idea and I don't know that anyone on the ground saw it.
There's a lesson here - I think it's to wear sunglasses when you are in a convertible or (as my husband said), "Sell the 'darn' convertible."
Thinking -

I love convertibles... Hope you find them JudyK .It will probably happen again and has probably happened before. These drivers of the uncovered loads remind me of what Ron White said; " Now a days they can fix your hearing to where you're able to hear a pin drop in the Grand Canyon...but you can't fix stupid."... That's true..
