Hey guys I'm looking to be rescued again, I have just reformatted my desktop and I don't have the recovery cd for my mother board how do I find out what motherboard I have and then how do I get my sound driver?

Cheers

Best and simplest is to go to the manufacturer's site of your actual computer, they normally offer all the drivers you need.

What if I am unable to determine who made it? It may possibly be omega but I can't find a thing on them, is there any way to check?

This will do a full audit of your system and let you know what your missing: Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html)

Oops I have that but I could work out where the sound card was, it said my motherboard is a micro-star international, but I've been unsuccessful in finding a driver on their website, even their auto-updater failed

There's a very good chance it uses a generic AC97 driver, so give this a try: Realtek AC'97 Driver (Windows 98/Me/2000/XP/2003) - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com (http://download.cnet.com/Realtek-AC-97-Driver-Windows-98-Me-2000-XP-2003/3000-2120_4-10238712.html)

It sort of worked, still have no sound but it now identifies it has the ability to play sounds, any ideas why it wouldn't be working? And yes I have made sure its not muted :)

You can also make sure that no other devices are muted. I will assume XP for this.

-Double click on the speaker next to clock
Make sure that volume control and Wave are not muted and sound levels up

You can also check device mgr to see if any red or yellow marks there and should also get name of audio device

Right click on my computer, properties, hardware tab, device mgr
-look for any red or yellow marks
-can find your audio device by clicking ply sign next to sound controllers

What sound device is listed in device mgr?

If the ac97 driver is only info listed there, try right clicking on it and choose uninstall

Once unisntalled, go back into device mgr and see what is listed next to the red or yellow mark

Also, here are 2 other ac97 drivers if that is what the board may be using

One is realtek and one is VIA and one sigmatel

Download the Sigmatel AC97 audio driver 5.1 for the STAC 9750 on Windows Vista, XP and 2000 (http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/sigmatel-ac97-stac9750-audio-driver.html)

Realtek AC97 audio driver package 4.06 download (http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/ac97.html)

VIA AC97 audio driver 7.00b download (http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/viaac97.html)

My motherboard is a micro-star international MS-XXXX and audio device with out realtek is legacy :)

Only says legacy? No other info maybe there as # or anything?

Here is another realtek driver to check out
Realtek ALC650/ALC655 AC97 Audio A3.52 Driver Download (http://www.driverskit.com/freedownload/Sound_Card/Realtek/ALC650_ALC655_AC97_Audio_A3_52/15299.html)

Also here is a driver update app that is freeware
Free Driver Update Software - Device Doctor (http://www.devicedoctor.com/)

Can try both, with device doctor, make sure any sound drivers that may be installed are uninstalled through device mgr before running.

Give that a shot and hopefully that will find what you need

Thank you very much seahwk83 first driver in the last lot worked and another thing we didn't anticipate is that if the jack into the speakers is only half way in they work, but when its all the way in they don't haha temperamental suckers too it seems again thank you
