View Full Version : What makes you move?

So what song makes you get up and move? It can either be an all time favorite or something new...

What makes you get out of your seat and play the air guitar, or attempt to break dance or look like you are having a fit?

Post a song name or a YouTube clip

Mine would be: "Low" by Flo Rida... :)

They don't seem to appreciate if your driving 135 miles mph on the highways. (218 kph) for those outside the U.S.

Cool... back before I got married and had my cool car, I used to listen to most R&B songs with bass... had a huge sub, so that was great, but now I have a tiny car, so not much cool song can be played in there...

Still..

Hi, BlackVY!

Would wanting to move in other ways other than you've listed also count, please? Also, are you interested in any style and/or genre of music?

Thanks!

Haha... yes Clough... other ways count too... as long as you mention what other ways that music makes you move.. Lol!

Any genre is fine... I enjoy my R&B and HipHop music... but right now I'm listening to Rascal Flatts... which is country rock I think... Its all good.. :)

Do you like medieval, Renaissance or barbershop chorus music? That's just to name a few of the types of music that I'm into. Some of the pieces would definitely inspire a person to move in certain ways, if that person knows how to enjoy the music.

Thanks!

Wow Clough... very interesting tastes you have...

I might see if I can find some of those types of music tonight and see if they can make me move... Barbershop does tend to make my foot tap though...

I'm just curious as to what you think barbershop styled music is, before you go searching for it, if you wouldn't mind sharing about that?

I know that I had a preconception as to what it was about, before I was invited to attend a rehearsal. My preconception turned out to be a misconception!

Thanks!

BlackVY
May 11, 2010, 09:45 PM
Isn't it a group of 4 people with different tone voices, who sing in harmony?

Just a guess

Clough
May 11, 2010, 09:52 PM
A quartet would be a group of four people. That is the main tradition of barbershop singing. However, there are also choruses. Within those choruses, there might be a few or many quartets.

As far as tone, I think what you mean is voice quality or timbre. In barbershop quartet or chorus singing, that would be tenor, lead, baritone and bass.

So, do you know any more about barbershop quartet or chorus singing, please?

BlackVY
May 11, 2010, 09:55 PM
Nope... that's about all I know...

Have you seen the sitcom "Scrubs"? There are 4 guys on there who sing a lot, and I think they do barbershop, but I'm not really sure... All I know is they sing acapella and it sounds good... Lol!

Clough
May 11, 2010, 10:00 PM
Okay. So, does mean that you liked what you heard?

No, I haven't seen the sitcom "Scrubs". I'm not much of a T.V. watcher.

It's interesting, that the last time that I checked, this thread has already had 60 views, and you just started it this evening! That's a pretty fast growth in views in a short amount of time for a thread!

I guess it is pretty good that people are checking out this thread, but not too many posts, other than you, me and Cali... but all good... the night is still young out there... but my day at work is coming to an end in about 2 hours, so that's cool... :)

I can't really listen to YouTube videos right now because I'm on a dial-up connection. When I'm on a high-speed connection, I'll be able to listen to what can be found by clicking on the link that you posted.

Please be sure to turn up your sound!

BlackVY
May 11, 2010, 10:41 PM

They are pretty groovy... the harmony is amazing... and how long they can hold a note for... awesome... now I know why they are the best... I also listened to their "The way you look tonight"... nice... :)

I like quite the plethora of music actually. From

YouTube - December, 1963 (Oh What A Night) - Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD7LNDLKfWY)

To

YouTube - Santana - Smooth (feat. Rob Thomas) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXp413NynFk)

And another genre

YouTube - Ted Nugent - Stranglehold (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0c3d7QgZr7g)

Still more...

YouTube - Lady Antebellum - Need You Now (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eB7T3lJ3dZ4)

It all depends on my mood at the time.

BlackVY
May 11, 2010, 10:57 PM
Nice one... I'd heard of them all... except for the last one...

Santana is an insane guitarist... he is the 1 who got me into playing the guitar, but I'm nowhere as good... Lol!

Clough
May 11, 2010, 11:04 PM
Wow!!

They are pretty groovy... the harmony is amazing... and how long they can hold a note for... awesome... now I know why they are the best... I also listened to their "The way you look tonight"... nice... :)

And, that was barbershop music! I'm glad that you liked it! :)

It's all in four parts. However, it might sound like other notes are there too. That's called "ringing". Overtones are heard in addition to the actual notes that are being sung. Then, there's what's called difference tones. Those are overtones that are formed by overtones ringing with each other.

In barbershop music, when a note is held for a really long time, that's called a "post". If a note is to be held for a really long time where people would normally need to take a breath, what we do is to "stagger" the note between singers so that it appears that the note is being held for as long as it is.

That particular group does the staggering of breathing so that it appears to be seamless!

I direct the men's barbershop chorus that's on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River in the Iowa - Illinois Quad Cities Area.

BlackVY
May 11, 2010, 11:09 PM
That's awesome Clough... thanks for all that info... I will go home and research some other barbershop choirs too... they sound cool... and yes, that group do the staggering so well... they also were very coordinated with their steps... Lol!

You should record some of your performances and post them up on YouTube so we can hear your chorus... :)

Clough
May 11, 2010, 11:25 PM
Well, if we get really good recording equipment, we just might do that! We do have video recordings, but I don't think that we have one that would be just right for a YouTube one just yet... Some of the video recordings are pretty good! But, in the videos are images of other people who we would need to get permission from for them to be in the video if it were to be broadcast anywhere. That would be a near impossible task to get all of the permissions.

If I can, I'll be posting some of our songs, in audio, on our chorus website.

Do you play an instrument or sing?

BlackVY
May 12, 2010, 04:33 PM
Sounds good Clough...

Yes, I do play the guitar and I sang a Rascal Flatts song at my wedding, to my wife, but nothing great... ;)

Clough
May 12, 2010, 05:16 PM
Do you read music that's on a staff to play the guitar?

BlackVY
May 12, 2010, 05:23 PM
Nope... I usually get a print out of the chords and if I'm not used to the song, I'll use a music stand, but if I know the song, I'll memorize it and just play it by myself, with looking at chords or anything.

Clough
May 12, 2010, 05:27 PM
Would you like to learn how to read music on a staff? If you learn how to do that, you'll be able to play a lot more songs as well as pieces.

BlackVY
May 12, 2010, 05:37 PM
That would be good... sounds interesting... how do I learn that?

What about learning how to read music like we had discussed earlier?

Sure, I was looking for your thread on how to read music, but if you could provide a link to it, that would be great :)

There's actually a number of them. I'll need to look them up...

If you could, that would be great. I went though 10 pages of threads you started, and I couldn't find it. Unless it wasn't a thread you started, or it was under a different name...

All of the threads were started by others. In most of the instances, I made suggestions to the original posters as to how to title and word most of the starting questions. Thanks for looking, though! I'll post links to at least a couple of them in a bit.

Most of the threads are now pretty old, so they are now archived. Although, people can still post on them.

Cool Clough... thanks for the links... Interesting, the last one especially... where you had screenshots of the sheet music... impressive, but I can't read that stuff, so I have my music with the chord above the lyrics. I will have to learn how to read music eventually, but I haven't picked up my guitar and played it seriously for a while, but I do jam with my sister for fun from time to time...

I will have to get a guitar for myself sometime... or my wife will get it for me.. :)

On one or two of the threads, I've even posted a link to where the music can actually be heard!

I can't read music either. But I can play the flute and the sax and the clarinet. I taught myself by listening to a song over and over again, until I just figured it out. I was in Band for 3 years, and failed every year because I couldn't read sheet music. Didn't matter that I could play just as good as the first stringers.

I'd have to say:

It's my band.

I don't know who filmed it, he didn't do a very good job.

Here's another one from over a year ago, it was my GNR cover band. I was wearing a wig. Sound is awful

I can actually teach you right on this site, how to be able to jam using jazz and/or folk melodies, chords and rhythms with anyone so that both persons would be successful. It would be a win-win situation!

The other person, or both, would need to be able to play the notes on a keyboard of some kind in the simple way that I would teach them to play them.

Since you already play some on the guitar, you could use that, too!

Thanks!

I do, just not the flute. But I would need to get some new reids.

Aurora_Bell
May 20, 2010, 04:11 AM
Oh yes I pick them up all the time, fool around, learn new songs, try to remember old ones. Why do you ask?

Clough
May 20, 2010, 12:07 PM
I ask because I'm wondering if you would like to learn how to read music that's written for them?

Aurora_Bell
May 20, 2010, 12:09 PM
Wow. Do you think you can teach me? I took band class for 3 years! I would love to try!

Clough
May 20, 2010, 12:14 PM
Yes! I can teach you!

It would need to be the subject of another thread, though.

Great Clough, that sounds awesome. Let me get some new reids over the week end. And I will start a thread Monday morning. I suppose I would DL video's to YouTube?

Clough

We'll need to discuss things...

You might not need to download anything to YouTube, but I'm not sure at this point.

I'll be back on here in about eight hours. Need to go tune a piano for a customer, go to a rehearsal and then a meeting.

Thanks!
