View Full Version : "please select the operating system to start", does that mean I have two partitions?

I am still using XP. My choices to start are XP Prof. or Windows. I want to install 98 for some old software. I've read that it can be done using a second partition. Does this message mean that I already have a 2nd partition and is it easy to install 98 on it and maintain XP on the first "regular" partition?

Thanks in advance, Andy

No, not necessarily especially if both entries point to the same operating system so if both point to Windows XP, most likely it is a 2nd install that was done without wiping the partition first or a failed install.

Installing Windows 98 on your computer will make the computer boot only to Windows 98 (even if you had 2 partitions) because the install will wipe your Windows XP boot entries and Win 98 will add its own boot loader to the partition because it will not see Windows XP.

What you're trying to do is a little more complicated than hitting next, next from the wizards that the OS provides. If you need to use Windows 98 every now and then your best bet might be to install Virtual PC and run Windows 98 in the Virtual machine than backing up data and recreating and rewiping partitions (because you'll either need to do a good amount of research to understand the procedure or get someone that can do it for you).

P.S. If you want to see your partitions you can use Disk Manager - start - run - diskmgmt.msc
