View Full Version : Eagle hunting a Deer in my 'back yard'
This story came out a few months ago but I though I would post it today, for all you animal lovers(namely Bambi) you might not want to watch,, j/k;)
Golden Eagle attacks White-tailed Deer at Nachusa Grasslands! (http://www.ilbirds.com/index.php?topic=32809.msg41222#msg41222)
This and many more great returns to this area thanks to the natural preservation and restoration here in the area.
Badger, wildcat, and wolf (and these Eagles, of which there are now 4 in the area)are just a few of the species returning.

That was really sad especially seeing the deers face. But cool. That was a HUGE Eagle!
I wanted to ask if the deer got away, but I think I will just let my own mind make the ending of that story. ;)

I have to admit, I just looked at the pics :o
My family (well the men) are big on hunting. Sad. But they use everything eat the meat and use the pelts.

He was one hungry eagle!
Or maybe he was just after a free ride :D
Great pictures, I'm glad the wildlife is returning to your area, it's always a beautiful thing to see.
Next to my parents house they had a group of about 2 dozen Wallabies they would go out and feed every afternoon.
Without warning the local council came and bulldozed the entire section of bush to make way for a new road.
I hope the Wallabies all found a new home further into the scrub :(

Fascinating. Thanks for posting those.
Yes, if you get shots of the eagle taking out a Turkey it would be great.

I hope too, man has been taking much more than nature can accommodate, something has to give, and nature has ways of fighting back..

I probably won't get any shots, other than from behind my sunglasses,, :D

Wonderful pictures. I feel for both animals. It's nature, and only the strong survive. :)

M can't protect you, I can take both of you down. Muwahahahahahaha! I am an eagle, you are the deer. :)
My cat once attacked a Seagull. It was quite amusing to watch. I was torn between rescuing the Seagull and rescuing my cat. I really didn't know who would win.
My dad said "sit back and watch". Our cat got close, even won a tail feather as a prize, but I'm sure the Seagull was laughing at him as he flew away.
Poor Whiskers, he didn't stand a chance. ;)
That one was a good story too, I have not seen a cat try a bird that big.:)
The occasional Osprey we have here are very exciting also, they perch high up in a dead tree and eat their catch, most impressive bird as well.

What I didn't understand is why Whiskers would even try. I could understand if he was starving, desperate, but he was well fed, well cared for.
I think it was just to prove that he could. A "look at me, I'm a big bad cat" type of move.
Sadly it ended up being a "Crap, that's a big bird. I hope no one saw that. Why are they laughing?" kind of move. ;)
My Lakota(A Norwegian Elk Hound) decided to start messing with a buck deer chased out by the farmers across the road, there were 2 or 3 does with him,, and he(deer) decided the dog was a threat to his women, and chased him for more than 600 yards, from across the street in the middle of the field, all the way to where the dog ran(with a line of wetness curving across the garage floor, in front of us) and the buck just jumped the kennel fence and went on his merry way(the does all were smarter, they went alongside the property where there was no fencing,, or humans)
I miss him:(
Anyone have an Elk Hound up for Adoption?

No Elk hounds in our shelter right now, but there are a few big breeds, a lot of Australian cattle dog mixes, even a few Beagles which is very rare.
Take a look;

You could come visit me and adopt a dog. Kill two birds with one stone. See, I'm on topic. ;)

There's no way that that's giant bunnies head. That rabbits head is bigger than that entire dog! :)
FYI, that was a real rabbit, bred by some German guy. I don't know what he's putting in their food, but Yowsa!

Scared you, didn't I?
Don't mess with me buddy, I know tons of vets. ;) :)
R has been working a lot of overtime lately, so we made a list of what to do with the extra cash. After reading the list, we realized that we're really warped.
The list.
1. Put Indy to sleep (I think it's time).
2. Neuter Chewy (definitely time)
3. Buy fence boards and paint.
After looking it over we realized that our options were to either put a hit on one dog or cut the balls off another. Both just seemed really wrong.
I love the new paint color for the fence. :)

I feel the same way about Indy M. The fact is, he's 15 years old, he's almost completely blind (vision is around 10%), he's almost completely deaf (another 10%), his back legs aren't strong, he can barely stand up most times, he can't get up the stairs, and even standing from a lay down position requires a lot of assistance.
He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but carrying him up stairs isn't an option (he weighs around 80 pounds).
He sleeps around 22 hours a day. He's not living, he's merely alive. :(
Trust me, we've been putting this off for a long time. We keep hoping that nature will intervene, that we won't be the ones to make the choice. It's not easy. No matter what, nature or appointment, it will be way too hard to accept. Joking about it helps. :)
Now, for Chewy, face it, those Attitudicals (that's what R calls them) have to go. Snip, snip. :D

Well you're like me, a dog isn't just a dog, it's a member of the family. Having to make the decision to pull the plug isn't easy.
I've never euthanized a pet. Not me personally. Not a pet that R and I have had. Indy will be the first.
The sad thing is, I'm no stranger to this. I used to volunteer at the Humane society. I worked in the kill room. I held the animals, cats, dogs, rabbits, you name it, while they were put to sleep. It was hard, but this is harder.
He's my baby. He's been with us since he was a puppy. He was the first living breathing thing both R and I were completely responsible for. He went through 2 kids being born, 2 new puppies being brought into the home, birds, fish, bunnies, and for a little while some unidentified rodent that we found in the yard. He was hit by a car, had his paw pad ripped off, a crash head first into the windshield, epilepsy, seizures (sometimes 20 plus a day), and more. Through all of it he still cared more about us then himself. He sat with me when my parents died, he wouldn't leave my side, not even for a minute. He welcomed the kids as if they were his own. Damn it. He may be ready. I'm not. :(
How did we go from eagles killing deer to Indy?
God I'm good. ;)
Sorry Ken. :o

I don't let my 4 month old Poms out in the backyard unattended because of a local hawk. My hubby said I was being overprotective. I'm convinced now.

Generally hawks and birds of prey are looking for the familiar to hunt, but if hungry enough, and the opportunity does arise, they will take what they can get!
Most domestic animals aren't in much danger, being around humans, hawks and the like are reluctant to come so close to danger themselves.

I couldn't open the link... I Want to SEE!!
We have so many birds big and small here, deer are always in our driveway and on our property. As well as cougars and other great animals. I have yet to see a cougar, but a neighbor has seen many. Pretty cool to think an Eagle would do that, he must have been HUNGRY! Or just wanted to show off for his friends:)
