Last week Iran dropped itself from consideration for a position on the United Nations Human Rights Council . Being on the council would've so obviously exposed the flaws of the HRC and I guess even the tone deaf UN saw the problem in the seating. The Obama Adm claimed a victory .

But as compensation ,under the radar ,Iran has evidently been assigned a seat on a different commission they are equally unworthy of occupying.

Buried 2,000 words deep in a U.N. press release distributed Wednesday on the filling of "vacancies in subsidiary bodies," was the stark announcement: Iran, along with representatives from 10 other nations, was "elected by acclamation," meaning that no open vote was requested or required by any member states — including the United States.

The Commission on the Status of Women (hereafter referred to as “CSW” or “the Commission”) is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), dedicated exclusively to gender equality and advancement of women...

The Commission's mandate was expanded in 1987 by ECOSOC resolution 1987/22 to include the functions of promoting the objectives of equality, development and peace, monitoring the implementation of measures for the advancement of women, and reviewing and appraising progress made at the national, subregional, regional and global levels.

As Joseph Abrams reports ,the Obama Adm did not even raise an objection or challenge Iran's bid.

But Iran being seated on this commisssion is equally as grotesque as having a seat on the HRC . Iran still actively employes the punishment of stoning for women for the crime of adultry . They bury them to their waist to immobilize them , and fire away .
This is a nation (as Steve pointed out recently ) that arrests suntanned women.

This is an appointment by the world body that is sure to honor the memory of Neda Agha-Soltan. It is one of those days that makes us proud to be part of the world community.

Take your pick, CSW's policy statement or Iran being given a seat to help in "gender equality and advancement of women," It's all a joke, right? When is Ashton Kutcher going to come out and tell us we've been punk'd?

Aside from the already codified stonings and lashings, the latest in Iranian advancement of women initiatives is arresting suntanned women (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/7639728/Suntanned-women-to-be-arrested-under-Islamic-dress-code.html). I'm sure it's just for their own good in reducing the number of promiscuous woman-caused earthquakes (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/apr/19/women-blame-earthquakes-iran-cleric).
