1) There is no standard prescription for prostate problems or Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) specifically. A, but not the only, prescription is sometimes Finasteride (in the US). I assume you are aware of this based on the second part of your question. However, numerous factors must be considered by your physician when prescribing, ex: co-existing medical conditions, allergies, etc.
2) To the best of my knowledge no US company makes a generic equivalent of Finasteride (Merck holds the patent until 2013). There are foreign companies that do manufacture generic brands, some of which (including market brand) are identified following:
Ajanta Pharma (trade name Appecia)
Aleppo Pharmaceutical (trade name Prosteride)
Cipla (trade names Fincar and Finpecia)
Dr. Reddy's (trade names Finax and Finast),
Intas Pharmaceuticals (trade name Finalo)
Ranbaxy (trade name Finara)
Zentiva (trade name Penester)
Actavis (trade name Hyplafin)
Zentiva (trade name Finpros)
Hemofarm (trade name Tectum)
Teva (trade name Prezepa)
