Ghosts are visual prjections of minds utlimate fear of death!
Ghosts may be apparitions of someone who is no longer physically alive in our knowledge...

Hi,
I believe that you have a general idea of what a ghost is. I believe that you are trying to find out more than just a quick fix for an answer.
When a human being dies his soul [or conscious self or psyche] separates from the dead body. Studies in both Near Death Experiences and reports from some Hospice workers show that there seems to be evidence, albeit subjective and circumstantial at best, that personal consciousness continues after physical, bodily death.
This would be a good time to explain what consciousness means in this case. We are not talking about mere awareness. We are talking about that which makes us aware of being aware. We are talking about the consciousness that makes us aware that we think, we ask, we reason. Although we can be knocked unconscious, we do not ever lose our consciousness, even after death. At least that is the theory behind life after life.
The first law of thermodynamics states that energy can neither be created or destroyed - that it can only change properties. Unfortunately many "ghost hunters" and pseudo-psychics misinterpret that by claiming that when a body dies, the energy that was in that body then changes and becomes the ghost. Not! The energy of the living body is spoken for. When we die, the micro-organisms that we kept at bay while alive now have full control and they multiply at at fantastic rate. So our energy is being used as food, giving energy in return to the organisms who are feasting upon us. Of course should we die in the wilderness, bigger things than just bacteria find us delicious! So a great deal of our energy is changed that way. Thermodynamic entropy will take care of some of the remaining energy and eventually we are a naked frame of bones. Those bones sit as potential energy, but lord knows what for!
So if it is not the physical energy that becomes the astral being, what does? As more and more research is done in theory and quantum physics, discoveries are being made that indicate that consciousness actually exists separate from the brain/body. It is also assumed that that consciousness has an energy all of its own, for as far as we know EVERYTHING is energy in one way or another. And it is THAT energy that moves on to become the after death being. Incidentally I have always believed that if undeniable prove of an afterlife exists that it will be accidentally discovered, not by a ghost hunter or a parapsychologist, but by a physicist looking for something else.
So assuming that all of the above holds some merit, where exactly do we go? It is believed that the energy of the soul enters a different dimension, most likely higher than the ones we are aware of. It seems that some of the known laws of physics, or rather the laws of physics that we know, may not be the same on the other plane. For one thing, our dimension of time, seems to be non-existent. At the very least the "concept" of time is different, and since as far as we know that time and space are related, or "relative" to each other, space seems to matter little to an astral being as well.
Now there is a difference between spirits and ghosts. A spirit is a soul that has gone into the light. The spirit realm is where a soul can become evolved; they grow, they learn. They are capable of traveling between their realm and ours. A ghost isn't so lucky. The owner of that soul decided for whatever reason to remain behind, to not enter the light. Not all make the decision willingly. Some who die a sudden or unexpected death may not immediately realize that they have died. But most ghosts made a conscious decision [and believe me, at that stage it is literally a CONSCIOUS decision] to remain earthbound because of a personal agenda. The reasons for ghosts, and thus the types of ghosts, are many and varied. I won't go into all the details. Suffice it to say that ghosts are still human - and the reasons that they have for doing things are as varied as the reasons living humans have for doing things.
So in a nut shell that is what a ghost is. I could write a book about them [Oh wait... I am!! ] but not here. I hope that this helped a bit.
Take care,
