How do you rate emeralds? I recently purchased a Brazilian emerald and it is cloudy. I was told this is the natural state of the Brazilian emerald.. Is this true?

I don't know much about Brazilian emeralds, but I do know that the higher the quality of the emeral the more blue green it looks and it should be clear.

Gem stones are graded similarly to Diamonds by clarity, color, size, cut.
Grading is with a 10x loupe.
Normally you will see the inclusions in Emeralds called a (Garden) clouds can be caused by inclusions, treatments, oils, bad cuts,etc...
Brazile, in the past produced some gem quality Emeralds -Key word is Gem Quality.
There are gems and then there are stones and then there is rough (un cut and un polished stones)
Color and clarity and size are key to prices of emeralds.
Hope this helps

Brazilian emeralds are known for their clarity and colour; as a matter of fact, a top quality emerald should not be cloudy at all. Just remember only a professional should clean your gemstone.

Your jeweler is right.
Brazilian emeralds are darker in tone and have heavy inclusions.
