In each cable you should have black/white/green or bare copper.

Connect all of the green or bare wires together.

Connect the black wire of the power cable to the black wire of the fan.

Hook the white wire of the power to the white wire of the switch, and the black wire of the switch to the black wire of the fan.

In the switch socket hook the white up to the top, and the black up to the bottom. Also hook up the green/bare one up to the green screw.

Make sure you shut off the breaker to that room before doing this, and to securely wire nut everything and tape it. Flick the power on and test.

Electrical short looking for a fire.

Previous poster erred in his wiring description.

You should have a Black/White bare feeder in the ceiling.

Connect the white wire from the switch to the Black source wire. Make sure you either use a Sharpie pen or electrical tape to paint or wrap around the white conductor going to the switch.

NEC Code allows you to re-task the Neutral (White) to carry power from the source conductor to the switch. You cannot use the white wire to return to the appliance.

Use the Black wire from the switch to connect to the Black (and Blue) wires from the fan. Black is for the fan, Blue is for the light kit if present.

Connect the White from the Fan to the White from the feeder cable.

It should be noted that there are two different wiring options suggested: One where the switch controls the fan and light, and the other where it just controls the light.
