screen porch

We hired a cont. and his wife to build a lrg. screen porch. He brought us a contract with labor listed as $3150 and materials and lumber listed as $4600 and the total was $8500.
He overbought and had lumber co. come and return about $850 of the lumber we pd for (we wrote the $4600 ck to lumber co and never even received a receipt) and he kept the $850. Says we signed contract and he can keep the returns. He hauled even the $90 bucket of nails off only a third used.
Are we locked in to the $4600? How about when he bought us the very cheapest screen doors he could find? He put indoor outlet covers on our five outlets on our front porch. Would not do several fairly major things he had SAID he would. We are not satified with the job.
Then my husband found that he had put on a lesser grade of metal roof than the specs called for. Does that get us out of "his contract". We do NOT want to cheat anyone but these two just got all excited when they found they could make extra money. They had begged us for the job because they were out of work.
Thank you for your help.
Can they sue us?
