I would get a college degree in social work. Become a Christian Psychologist. Discover a cure for Autism and Downs Syndrome. Since I have no College Degree... I would start a movement to help older people who have fought for our Country. Start a bill to let people see how many of our veterans young and old are getting lost in the system.
Thanks Stringer.. Great Thread... :)

They are our youth and society cannot afford to loose too many more generations of them.

Hi, Stringer!
One of the first things that I would try to do is to find a way for everyone to be able to have a job.
There are others that I can think of, but that would probably be the first.
Great idea for a thread, Stringer!
Thanks!

I have an autistic son (a form called hyperlexia) and am married to a guy with Asperger's whose deceased father probably had Asperger's also. My husband and I figured out only recently that he is an Aspie -- the condition was nearly unheard of when we were growing up. My husband is retired from a career with Western Electric/Lucent as a 5ESS installer. It was a very structured job with lots of detail -- perfect for him and his needs. Now I understand why my husband insisted on going to the same vacation spots year after year, staying in the same motels, and eating in the same restaurants. So many things I understand now! And our son has worked in a library for almost twenty years -- the perfect place for him (loves to read and remembers -- without deliberately memorizing them -- Dewey decimal numbers, authors, titles, etc.).
I know there are children who are profoundly autistic -- and probably adults who are institutionalized for the same reason when no one could figure out what was wrong with them -- but I don't know that I would find a cure for autism. I'd want to find a way to help those profoundly handicapped by it, but the autistic people I personally know are proud of who they are and wouldn't want to be boring "normals" like you and I are. They are like left-handed people who have to adapt to the rest of us who are righties.

Now, wait a minute! It's when we fail and make mistakes that we learn. We'd never learn anything if we were always successful at anything we did. If I crack an egg over the bowl of creamed butter and sugar when I'm making cookies and pieces of shell fall into the bowl along with the yolk and white, batter, I've just learned something -- crack the egg over a clean cereal bowl or measuring cup so I don't end up with egg shells in my cookie dough. In fact, let's go back to when we are babies -- a baby's mistakes are how it learns. And the baby not only learns the right way, but knows what to avoid doing next time.
Continuous success with no mistakes breeds arrogance and impatience with others "less fortunate."

I didn't "work with" my son Daniel. Autism was unheard of and not talked about until just recently. I always accepted Daniel as a kid who learned things a slightly different way. For instance, he is a visual person, so he has to see something in print, and then it's his forever. Hearing his teachers give out assignments didn't work; he learned to write down assignments immediately. (His father carries around a pocket full of 3x5 cards of to-do lists of all sorts.) Neither husband or son is a social person and has no interest in "hanging out." Being very social, I've had to find my own way in our marriage. Son Daniel has only one BFF and would rather read something by Pushkin or work on a crossword puzzle than socialize. Both husband and son have had to find their way without offending the rest of the world.

But stringer, dear heart, I WANT to make mistakes. I think the do-something-and-not-fail statement needs to be restated and clarified. But then, that's just picky me, I guess. (If you could do something and it would come to fruition and accomplish exactly what you intended?)

Yup, each of us including autistic people is unique. There's a young guy with Asperger's in my library writers' group who got through college with a B+ average, yet one of his psych professors (of all people!) decided he was learning disabled and tried to get him labeled as such "to help him." Many Aspies are fantastic with math and science. Have you ever heard of Temple Grandin?

To get back on track a little (even though I AM keeping my fingers crossed that kitty comes back), I figured I'd answer the question.
I'd find a way so everyone could have inner peace and happiness. Not the happiness that comes from other people. The kind that only comes from yourself and knowing and loving who you and where you are and that all is right in your corner of the world.

What would you do if you knew that you would not fail?
That is a really tough question. I would like to do a Vulcan Mind Meld with either Bethoven, or Mick Jagger, probably Mick Jagger, and learn all he knows about being a smart business person, and a musician and singer.
Then, with that information at my fingertips, I'd start a new band, called Vulanstones, and sing my rear off at Carnegy Hall, and have the paperazzi snap my picture and race off to a private island in my own jet, picking up a few cabana boys along the way (to mix my umbrella drinks), and have a manicure/pedicure/seaweed wrap etc. and prepare for my next concert, in Hawaii.
Naturally all this would come with a personal chef.

I'm simple and I guess selfish. I just want to be happy.:)
OK...I guess I want the people I love to be happy too!:D
EDIT: confused about Kit, come back Kit!
That's all I want. True happiness for everyone. I think that would solve so much more than anyone realizes.
Crime rates would drop. As would violence and war. The economy would be better because people would stop trying to 'buy' happiness. People would be healthier and less stressed. The divorce rate would drop.
If everyone could find peace and happiness WITHIN themselves, instead of constantly looking for it in other places, then the world would be a better place.

Thanks Stringer....would you say goodby to all my friends for me. I am going to unsubscribe today. Just tell everyone..I will miss them. See you Stringer if not here than another place someday and we'll know each other. Clough and j and Alty m and ami and talaniman and jhelper. I make too many mistakes on here and I don't mean too. I love all of you.
I honestly do not think this is goodbye nor should it be. There is no reason to unsubscribe it is an awesome thread that Stringer started. There is no need to miss anyone. You did not make any mistakes on here, and no one thinks you have. We all love you KitKat22. Just know that we all care and love you and your presence here is very important to us.
I would be doing what I am doing right now. Training, and working with the elderly and other people who can not take care of themselves. In a perfect world there would always be caring people in this field but unfortunately there are so people that think of it just as a job and not care as well for these people. If It were up to me people who only truly care about the patient and not the money, not bringing in a paycheck and only the people that are truly compassionate would be the only ones working in that field.
Okay enough said..

The little butt has climbed out of the nest and was just lying on the floor about a foot away, sleeping. Edith, being the amazing mom she is, never noticed.
I decided to experiment the other night, and as long as she has ONE baby in the nest with her, she doesn't care if the others are crawling around on the floor. That means it's up to me to count them when I pass to make sure no one escaped again.

I got through it but I have to say that they injection of the dye was a really weird experience.
The nurse told me that some people experience a very warm sensation and the sensation that you just peed. Yup, that happened. I thought I had peed my pants, it felt so darn real. I didn't, but boy did it feel like I had.
Now I just have to wait for the results. Crossing my fingers that the colonoscopy discovered everything and that I don't have anything else to deal with.

I think this is the last test, at least for a while. Compared to the colonoscopy it was a piece of cake. Still, the sensation that I peed when I didn't, that was really strange, no desire to repeat that any time soon. ;)

Your request wasn't out of line.
The thread seemed to start with a definite purpose and cause. Then it proliferated into generalities not according to the original question at hand.
I just don't like general discussions because they can go anywhere. Seem to be just chat...
But, that's just me...

Alty
Apr 9, 2010, 06:52 PM
I agree Heath, chatting is fun, but we were bad, the thread wasn't originally in the lounge which is reserved for chatting. Although I'm sure Stringer didn't mind we should know better.
Sorry Ben, Clough and Judy. I can only speak for myself, I like to talk to people, I like to discuss with people, and in the course of discussion sometimes the original topic is forgotten and we go off on a tangent. I guess I'm just too accustomed to dealing with people in real life and not on the internet where the topic must be adhered to.
This is why any thread I start that is general, a question that can lead to other discussion, I put it in the chat forum so that no one gets upset if the thread goes off course.
I'll refrain from posting here and leave the thread to continue with the discussion it was intended for. :)
I also want to apologize to Stringer, I hope you can forgive me for my part in this.
Hugs all. Happy discussion. I'll unsubscribe from this thread.

Clough, I have to point out that you also strayed from the thread when you asked Kit what was going on. That post could have been handled via PM but you chose to post it here, clearly deterring from the subject of the thread. I too posted to Kit asking what was going on, but please don't insinuate that you played no part in it. Your post was written to provoke discussion that would not follow the original question
I don't mind apologizing for my part in it, in fact I already have apologized, but you too wrote posts that had nothing to do with this thread and yet here you are chastising the rest of us. .
As it is, I have no further interest in participating on this thread.
Have fun and I hope that the discussion gets on a track you can all be happy with. Frankly, I can't guarantee that I'll post to make everyone happy so it's best that I just unsubscribe.

Hey! When's the last time that you saw my chastising someone, Alty? I virtually never do it! (Except, occasionally for the people looking for direct answers to their homework questions!)
Yes, I strayed on this thread, as I have on others. But, it's been for very brief periods. We had a member on this thread who was in some trouble. Needing caring and attention. Straying that much was an exception. It was also very unusual. Those times happen...
Whether someone gets a private message or not is also something that can be ambiguous. We don't know for sure...
If we know that someone is paying attention to a thread, then sometimes we need to address them on the treads.
No pat answer here... Please don't be mad at me forever, okay?

I am upset Clough but I won't be forever, it's just not who I am so no worries. Maybe I need a break from AMHD. I don't know.
It's been a bad day and frankly, I'm tired of always getting blamed for hijacking threads when really I could never do it alone.
I'm a people person. I answer threads as if I'm talking to the people in person. Sticking to one strict subject and never deterring isn't something I do in real life. When I'm with friends we discuss things and sooner or later the discussion veers off to something else and then something else and so on. I'm still not used to being on the internet where people expect pages and pages and pages of discussion on one topic that can really be covered in one post no discussion required.
It's my issue, no one else's. If anything I guess I've learned that I should stick to the chat threads and leave the threads like this alone. Really I posted an answer to this thread and I really didn't need to come back to discuss further. I have to learn to post and run so I don't end up talking to the people I like.
Anyway, like I said, I'm sorry and I promise I'll stay off threads like this. No more answering questions that seem to made for discussion and fun but are really only post and run type questions. I just have to learn the difference.

Alty, you're not the only one who tends to chase chickens (to borrow a phrase from one of my favorite authors). I think most of us tend to hop from one subject to another. That's why I never care if the threads I start stay on topic. I'm usually one of the first people to blow them off-topic.

Enigma, I'm not upset at you either, we all did it together, no one is to blame. I'm not upset about being accused of hijacking, I did, I admit it. No, I wasn't alone, we all pitched in. I'm upset because it seems to be such a big deal when this thread was really a discussion to begin with.
This wasn't a thread about some child that wanted to commit suicide or a person with a disability that needed help.
