We have a Rheem AC/Heating system. Recently, we noticed that the air conditioning system has been putting out slightly warm air. At times, it is at very low pressure. It also frequently trips the breaker. So, we called a technician. He claimed that the entire system needs to be replaced, and then changed his mind later. He was an a**hole the entire time.

When he left, we went outside to look at it. We noticed that even when everything is turned off (heating/cooling=off fan=auto), the compressor won't stop running. To get it to stop, we had to flip the breaker switch.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Thanks in advance.

You may have multiple problems. The highest probablity is the Compressor contactor outside. It stuck closed.

Stuffs missing to help troubleshoot. Usually if you kill power inside, the outside unit goes off. Power is still there, but ti turns off/

Any idea what to do about the compressor problem? Looking around, some people replace the relay, what do you think about that? I'm not sure why, but the outside unit continues to run unless we turn it off at the breaker board.

Turn off just the inside unit with the emergency switch. Put the breaker for the compressor on.

If the compressor runs, the relay is stuck.

Inspect the relay and replace.
