My cat has just given birth to six kittens. They are now three days old. She shares a box with them and is a really good mother. I think that she is coping really well but my boyfriend thinks that she is going to suffocate them. When she move or gets back into the box she sometimes lays on top of them. I think they are fine because they wriggle out but he thinks otherwise and keeps shouting at me and the cat. He insists in staying up all night to watch them. Do they really need this or will they be able to crawl out from underneath her? Please help.

I think one wriggle proves all is fine. Three days is more than enough time for tragedy to manifest and it hasn't. Take a breath and think too. If cats were prone to this, ask yourself wouldn't you be hearing about it, I know I would be... and I never have heard of such a deal. I have raised abandoned kitties and seen litters raised before. She knows what she is doing but nervous papa there may have to stay up anyway (I think that is kind of sweet LOL except enough with the shouting, okay? )

Thanks for your reply. I managed to make him go to bed last night and leave her in peace. And when we woke they were all still alive and kicking. I think he's mind is at rest now.
