So my wife is in INDIA and I need to get her an ITIN for my tax returns.

How do I get her passport copy certified in Mumbai?
1. Does it have to be from the issuing authority only or US Consulate in Mumbai is OK?
2. Does it need an apostille?

Thanks and Regards

Hello,

I read somewhere that US consulate will not certify the passport anymore, but they DID certify passport copies of my wife as original and true copies and I submitted them to IRS as well...

Thanks...

Get copy notorised. Then take it to office of Ministry of External affairs for apostille. The Ministry have a office/section specially for this purpose.

What MukatA says is accurate.

However, call the consulate or embassy and ASK if they will cerify the passport photocopy. If they do, GREAT!

If not, get the apostille.

Hi All Responders,

Thank you for taking time out to reply. I realize the gratitude is belated and I am sorry for that.

I did have to get an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs.

Thanks

That is what I expected. The U.S. State Department effectively prohibited their embassies and consulates from certifying passport photocopies in March of 2009.
