I am planting an herb garden and I'm using planters, the only place I have available to put them is on my front stairs. My only concern is that the stairs have a roof over them, will my herbs get enough sunlight if they're under a roof?

It depends on what herbs you are planting. Some like full sun and others like shade or partial sun.

I am planting the basic cooking herbs, basil, rosemary, oregano, thyme, mints, dill etc.

Most of these prefer full sun for optimum growth.

Would it be better to keep them inside near a window rather than outside in the shade?

The more sun they can get the better they will do. Full sun means West Sun.

Hi, macdoncl!

Generally, full sun means at least eight hours of sunlight a day.

Thanks!

Herbs are small, can you not move them around to spots with full sun? They don't take up much room, maybe nobody will notice them:rolleyes:

I have heard that many people have grown herbs inside with a good window. I have no such window, so mine are all outside fending for themselves.

Thanks for all your help, I'm going to have some window boxes installed on the side of my house so they should be OK.

The most exposure to the sun will be the best, macdoncl! You can then regulate the exposure as you see what's going on with them.

Starting with the limited exposure to the sun would hardly give you a fighting chance.

Thanks!
