View Full Version : Real Mayonnaise or a Substitute. Which Do You Prefer and Why, Please?

Hi, All!

Me? I'm a person who likes to use real mayonnaise. I know that there can be a number of reasons for using a substitute like salad dressing, low-fat or fat-free mayonnaise, whipped salad dressing like Miracle Whip, or maybe even plain low-fat yogurt combined with low-fat cottage cheese.

What's your preference to use on things like salads, potatoes, tuna fish, sandwiches and a number of other variety of foods?

I'm basically looking for answers having to do with the types of foods on which real mayonnaise would be used, if a person prefers to use it.

It would also be good if you would share what you do use, if you use a substitute for real mayonnaise.

Thanks!

Hey Clough!
Personally, I prefer real mayonnaise such as Hellman's on things like sandwiches and mixing it in with tuna fish.
And I like Miracle Whip in salads. I don't know of many people using it in salads, but it is actually very good that way with oil.

For chicken salad (like for sandwiches) I find its better to use mayo and not miracle whip... the flavor of the miracle whip is too distracting...

Also, just an fyi, instead of just mayo, you should mix in about 1/3 to 1/2 softened cream cheese to the mayo... that is up to one part cream cheese to one part mayo... it makes the chicken salad less, uh, mayo-ey.

Same thing with a crab cake I've made... miracle whip flavors just don't belong,

Hi, sabrewolfe!

Is there a particular type of oil that you like to use?

I've often wondered about the various uses of cream cheese.

I love the taste of it! But, when I've purchased it, it usually just sits in the fridge until I need to throw it away!

Very helpful information from you there, kp2171!

As anyone can see, I've very much gotten on a food sort of kick lately on the site!

Thanks!

Hi, sabrewolfe!

Is there a particular type of oil that you like to use?

Actually, I can't remember any particular oil brands off hand that I like. My girlfriend usually does the shopping and she's asleep right now.
I'll try to remember to ask her what brand she gets. I tried checking in the kitchen, but it seems we are out of it.

Cream cheese mixed with the mayo. Never thought of that one.
How is that with tuna fish? Have you ever tried that?

Fantastic use for cream cheese...

Go to a good deli and ask for a good moist salami... one that isn't too "porky"... I favor a deli that has a nice garlic/italian salami that isn't too overpowering... just a nice flavor.

Take a package of cream cheese and let it sit out for a few hours until softened. If you have a bowl mixer, use it. If not, you'll do this by hand... put the cream cheese in a bowl and add tabasco sauce and mix well. It'll take some effort to do this by hand if you don't have a mixer. Add a lot of tabasco... like at least 1/4 bottle... you want to taste the cream cheese and have a nice warm kick. You have to add so much more tabasco than you think you will.

When you get the salami ask for it to be thinly sliced. Too thick and it doesn't roll right. Now spread the cream cheese mixture on a piece of salami and roll it up.

That's it.

If you get the right meat and you spice the cream cheese right, it's a killer simple appetizer. I've taken 2-3 lbs of these to a party and there's usually not much left if any.

I've never minded mayo with tuna... I like the taste actually.

The cream cheese trick I learned from a caterer. Shed also add a splash of lemon... usually crushed almond bits or crushed pine nuts.

And all of this is mixed with the mayonnaise? Correct?

no... I'm sorry. Off topic. Was running with the "what to do with cream cheese" in the above post...

Nope. Just cream cheese softened, mixed with tabasco until warmly spiced and spread on the salami piece, which gets rolled up like a tube. Then eat it just like that.

Local urban legend says my ex father in law, italian guy, made this up one night after closing down the bars and coming home drunk and hungry. Its is demanded at every big family gathering we go to at the holidays.

The right meat makes a difference.

I don't really think that it was off topic. Seemed to fit right in with what was being discussed. Besides that, I'm the one who asked you about the cream cheese.

What is your background with foods and food preparation, please? You're opening up so many possibilities as to what people might make with food!

I usually do too! Because of the nature of my work in the past as well as the present, most of my closest friends have been women. Am having my daughter and another woman over for and Easter dinner where I'm presently house and dog sitting.

I like the cooks illustrated books.

I often use allrecipes.com and sometimes epicurious.com... search for recipes and look for those highly rated and often made...

This is a good one! Or its also good just spreading the cream cheese on the salami and then wrapping it around a crisp dill pickle spear, cut it into sections and it makes a great party appatizer.

Hellman's has a new Mayo made with Olive Oil. It's become my favorite now. Still use Miracle Whip on some things but the fact I can get away from soybean oil in Mayos now makes me ecastatic.

I'll just have to check that out, twinkie! I learn new things here all the time!

By the way, when I was a child, I was basically a product of soybeans. Seems like I was allergic to everything else...

Thanks!

I really like veganese mayo. It is made with grape seed oil opposed to egg yolk and vegetable oil. It is a lot healthier and tastes very good too!

I live in Arizona, so at Safeway is where I get it. I see you live in IL, so you might want to try Dominick's or Jewel-Osco.

Dominick's and Safeway are pretty much the same. You would find it in the cold section. It's not on the same shelf as the other mayos.

Try Dominick's though.

When I was a small my Dad used to make Mayo sandwiches.. it was white bread and about a 1/4" or more of Mayo. I still gag to this day when there is too much Mayo on anything or in anything.

He did what he had to do and I give him credit, but Ecchhhkk!

Hello Clough,

Well I use real mayonnaise on a lot of things. I make my own club sandwiches, have to have mayo. Make tuna salad sandwiches. Make potatoes salad or macaroni salad. Egg salad.

Taco's and burrito wraps. Hotdogs, cut up onions and mix mayo with the onions and layer the bun, then the ketchup and mustard goes on top with some melted cheese, but defiantly mayo is the main ingredient.

I get ill when I eat soybean anything. And I used to eat roasted soybeans (I love them but they don't even remotely like me). I have to be very careful to avoid soybean oil in processed food products as I get bad digestive problems from them AND gain weight to boot from soybeans. I don't get gas or gain weight from the olive oil mayo though and it tastes like regular mayo.

I went to buy 'back up' mayo today and saw the olive oil stuff... went to get it and noticed it said reduced calorie:eek: I picked up the regular stuff.
Do they have a olive oil mayo that is not reduced calories? I usually find that 'reduced calories' = 'tastes like cr-p':)
