View Full Version : How Do You Know When the Boiled Eggs Have Been Boiled Enough?

Hi, All!
Okay, some of you regulars know that I've been getting into the deviled egg thing. Have been doing lots of experimenting with fixing them. Also, I'm finding that preparing them is a really messy thing to do!
My question is though, how do you know when you've boiled them enough, please?

You DON'T boil them!
Put however many eggs you want to boil in cold water to cover.* Put a lid on the pot and bring the water to a boil. REMOVE THE POT FROM THE FLAME and let sit for 20 minutes. Do not lift the lid or remove it during this time. After the 20 minutes have passed, remove the lid and run the eggs under cold water.
Once you've made your yolk mixture, spoon it into a zip-lok bag, cut off the tip of a corner, and pipe the yolk mixture into each solid white half.
*If the egg floats, throw it away.

I think that bringing the water to boil would be boiling them, Wondergirl! But, thank you so much for your advice!
What is the purpose of running them under cold water, please?

Boiling them is boiling them. You don't boil them for 20 minutes. When you turn off the flame, the water has just come to a boil. The eggs cook in the no-longer-boiling water.
What is the purpose of running them under cold water, please?
Specifically, to stop the cooking process (otherwise, they will get a green skin inside around the cooked yolk), and also to cool them enough to handle them asap.

Ah, I see! The ones that I just made, I boiled for about a half-hour! They turned out pretty good though, none-the-less!

I just tried this method, but forgot the 20 min rule.:)
We ate the wonderful soft cooked eggs and I started again.:D

Okay, twenty minutes boiling. Correct? Just boiled three eggs. Oops! Did I mess up?
Am going to try the cold water thing.
