I am an out of state non-custodial parent.
My 12 year old, and now infinately grounded child, broke into a building with another child and caused some damage. This was while at his mothers (the custodial parent + parent of primary residence), on her time (ie: on her watch).

Am I financially liable for this? A friend mentioned her homeowners may cover this, but I really don't know if that's the case... and unfortunately, she's not very forthcoming or truthfull in financial situations.

Technically, you should pay for half of whatever the damages are. I don't know who your friend is or why they think homeowner's insurance would cover damage that occurred at another location.

Should your ex try to recover some of her "costs," tell her that you want a receipt and/or canceled check proving what she paid. My husband's ex is notorious for this - so far we've owed her $52 for a single doctor's bill, $350 for medical bills prior to their divorce, half the children's school lunches. When we ask for a receipt, she stops asking for money.
