I am thinking about buying an HD camcorder. I plan on putting the videos onto DVDs then playing them on a standard TV. Is this possible? How does that work? I not really good with technology yet and am trying to learn but don't want to waste my money on something I can't use. Thank you for your time

Yes, all camcorders whether high definition video or not have a "composite/analog" AV-out connection that connects to any TV.
It is also possible to store the data on the hard drive of your computer until you purshase an HDTV. Transferring to a hard drive will require your computer to have a firewire port. Firewire, IEEE1394, DV, i.LINK are all the same thing. Connect the DV port on the camcorder to the firewire port on the computer. If your computer does not have a firewire port, hopefully it has an available expansion slot so you can add one. 60 minutes of DV will use about 14 Gb of computer hard drive space. 63 minutes of HDV will use about 44 Gb of space.
Hope this helps.
