View Full Version : Ceiling Fan Wiring? (just want light to be switched)

I've got a ceiling fan currently wired as pictured below. The switch on the wall controls power to the entire unit (light and fan). I want the switch to just control the light. I want the fan to be controlled only by the pull-chain.

What changes with the wiring would need to be made so this can happen?

Thanks!

Should be a black at the light that currently works by the switch, you may have a constant hot in the fan box to attach a pull chain controlled fan.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Bare with me as I'm not that educated on electrical issues. The fan unit currently have two pull chains, one for fan (3 speed), one for light (on/off). Both currently work as expected as long as the wall switch is on.

I'm not really sure what you mean by a constant hot in the light box. What do I need to look for to confirm?

For reference, this is a Hampton Bay fan unit.

What wires are at the fan?

If only black, white and ground then you cannot do as you want.

That fan box will have a ground, neutral and a switched leg at the least, you may have wires in the box not attached to the fan, but may be a constant hot for the fan.

Where would the wires be in the unit (its installed in my home). The fan unit appears to be an AC-552. By searching this forum it would appear Hampton Bay names units and does not refer by model #. In that case, the fan looks like this one. (http://store.ceilingfans101.com/s/10001/MyProducts/hampton_bay_52inch_ceiling_fan.jpg)

Are the wires located in the top of the unit that is flush with the ceiling? They don't appear to be located in the main motor container.

The house wiring, in the box in the ceiling above the fan. Not the wiring of the fan itself.

I second Stan's question.
