I tried to pay a cc off in 2004. No one knew where my file went when I called the company. I contacted the 3 credit bureaus and had this removed from my credit report . Now I have a lawyer telling me that I owe them almost triple the original amount. Do I have to pay this?

Your 'file' is in their computer system, loopy and it was a delinquent credit card debt then there is no way anyone lost it. They want payment with interest, that's why it seems so much. If they get a judgment on your for that total amount, then yes, they will come after you.

I contacted them for two weeks almost six years ago. I had to pay off my debt to get a house and they claimed they didn't have my name on file . Doesn't the credit bureau check this too when you ask them to delete an account from your credit report?
