I need to replace a 40+ year old wall phone. When I removed it from the wall I found the wires are connect directly to the wall phone - there is no jack. Additionally the wires coming out of the wall are all brown. How can I make a new phone work. I also need a DSL line filter since I just got wireless internet from AT&t.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hopefully, you haven't yet disconnected the wires from the phone. Or at least marked which wire went where.

There should be a rectangular(ish) component in there that has some screws to which the wires from the wall are attached.

The one going to the screw marked L1 would be the GREEN wire, and the one going to L2 would be the RED wire. You can ignore the others.

Now you need a wall-mounted RJ-11 jack (http://www.summitsource.com/images/products/AC25SW.jpg). I'd recommend getting one with a built-in DSL filter. Check with a reputable phone/electronics store. Attach the wires you marked as red and green to the appropriate screws on the new jack and you're back in business.

If you've already removed the wires, you can buy an inexpensive phone-line tester to determine which wires are the ones you need.
