I have just had a rescue dog and as soon as he is on his own he crys even if its left for 5mins. Any advice

Sounds like he might be suffering from separation anxiety. Is he crated while you are gone or left free to roam? Some protocols for relaxation might help with this.
How old is your new dog? Sometimes leaving the radio on helps sooth the anxiety as well. Believe it or not, sometimes crating can help in anxiety issues as well. It creates a den-like atmosphere. Just make sure not use the crate ofr deicipline.
